CHAMP

The Childhood and Adolescent Migraine Prevention Study (CHAMP) was conducted jointly with clinical investigators from Cincinnati Children's Hospital. The study tested two treatments for children and adolescent migraine, treatments that have been found effective in adults but were not well-tested in children, against placebo. The result, which surprised the pediatric migraine research community, was that placebo did just as well as both migraine drugs in preventing migraine in children. Though the trial did not result in a treatment for childhood migraine, it did demonstrate that finding out what does not work is sometimes as important as finding out what does. The results of the CHAMP study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the trial was named one of the top 10 advances in pediatric medicine in 2016 by the journal's editors.
